Equestrian Heritage of the Somerset Hills

Local historian W. Barry Thomson will give an illustrated presentation about the Somerset Hills’ rich and varied equestrian heritage. After a broad contextual overview of the development of the so-called “Mountain Colony” and the many equestrian activities, Mr. Thomson will focus the history of the “Farmers’ Day” races that evolved into the annual Far Hills Race Meeting steeplechase event, and the history and art of the elegant four-in-hand road coaches that were owned and driven by the area’s wealthy estate owners.
