Two Books, One Discussion

January 29, 2014 // Filed under Blog

buddhaMembers of Saturday Samplers, a Bernardsville Library book discussion group, are currently reading two works of fiction by author Julie Otsuka for their upcoming meeting on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 3:30 p.m.  Ms. Otsuka’s first novel, When the Emperor Was Divine, will be discussed in tandem with her more recent book, The Buddha in the Attic, published in 2012.  Both novels describe significant aspects of the Japanese-American experience.  The Buddha in the Attic presents the point of view of Japanese “picture brides” who came to California in the early 1900′s, made lives for themselves, had families and developed successful businesses, only to be faced with anti-Japanese hysteria during World War II.  When the Emperor Was Divine deals specifically with the ordeal of one Japanese-American family forced into American internment. Copies of these books are available in the library for those who are interested in attending the discussion. Saturday Samplers meets once a month, and new members are welcome to join this group led by staff member Evelyn Fischel.
