Join us at Bernardsville Public Library on Monday, June 24, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and blast off the summer! The Library will be transformed into an Out-of-This-World’s Fair in honor of the summer reading theme this year: “A Universe of Stories.” The fair will feature even more games, prizes and snacks than last year. Adding to the fun will be a roving stilt walker and unicycle rider who juggles. There will be only a nominal fee to play the games and purchase snacks. [Note: The Library will close from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on June 24 to set up the fair.]
Children and teens can begin registering for Bernardsville Library’s Summer Reading program on the same day as the fair, Monday, June 24th. Registration continues throughout the summer, but the sooner you register, the more reading you can log. Summer Reading Club participants will earn prizes for reading or listening to materials of their choice, from books to magazines, comics and more. School assignments count too! All children who log at least two hours by July 22 will be invited to the mobile planetarium at the Library on July 29.
Preventing summer slide is another reason to join the summer reading program. It’s well known that students can move backward academically during the summer if reading and learning are not continued and reading achievement declines as well. But if students read just six books over the summer, they can maintain their current reading level, and, if they read between ten and twenty books of their own choosing, they can actually increase reading achievement.
The Library has a summer full line-up of exciting and informative programs for all ages including story times, yoga, music, and crafts for very young children. For elementary school aged children, there is a magician, an astronaut, a planetarium, a party to unveil the Library’s new telescope, and more. Teen programs include the fun to the serious with a murder mystery program, book clubs, a writing club, games, crafts, and college prep workshops including a college essay writing program and a financial aid workshop. Teens entering 9th-12th grades who are interested in summer volunteer opportunities should visit the library website for instructions and a schedule of training sessions during the last two weeks of June. In addition to scheduled events, there will be weekly challenges such as puzzles, trivia, a scavenger hunt, and more. Those who try their hands at the challenges will have a chance to win raffle prizes.
The summer finale is for everyone: a campfire Ice Cream Social featuring a professional storyteller/musician. What better way to end the summer than to listen, laugh and sing with your neighbors while enjoying delicious Penguin ice cream?
The staff at Bernardsville Public Library knows that summer doesn’t end until school begins which is why the Summer Reading Club and many activities continue through August 31. Stop in at the Library and get ready to blast off to summer!
