Part-Time Youth Services Library Assistant
15-25 hours /week
$15.30/hr

The award-winning Bernardsville Public Library is seeking an outgoing, imaginative person who will stop at nothing short of pyrotechnics to help bring programs to life, promote collections, and respond to patrons. This is an excellent hands-on opportunity to learn from an award-winning staff and gain experience in a nationally recognized library.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Development and execution of programs and activities for elementary school children.
• Assist with a range of programs and activities for youth of all ages on an as needed basis
• Participate in collection development and reader’s advisory services for youth of all ages
• Assist with major events such as the summer reading program and winter camp as well as one time large-scale programs such as Harry Potter’s birthday party and the World’s Fair
• Occasional substitution for circulation staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Interest in children, literacy, and children’s reading material, games, music and movies
• Ability to work well with other staff members and to collaborate on assignments and projects
• Ability to work independently to complete assignments and projects
• Creativity and interest in developing fun and educational programs for all age ranges with a primary focus on children in grades K-5.
• Flexibility regarding schedule as well as work assignments

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
• Professional experience working with elementary school-aged children.
• College degree
• Availability to work Mondays from 1:00-9:00 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am-6:00 pm, and a minimum of two weekend days per month

ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
This position supports a wide range of services for the Youth Services Department as well as the Library. Any of the following skills/experiences are a plus:
• Library experience preferred
• Customer service experience
• Working with people whose first language is not English
• Working with special needs populations
• Website maintenance
• Copy editing and proof reading
• Competence using social media.
