Thinking Out Loud: A Philosophical Perspective on Contemporary Issues

Date: Mar 13, 2019
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Bernardsville Library

The discussion topic this month in our philosophy series will be “smart-phones, social media, and our hyper-connected world.” Sociologists and psychologists have now documented the many ways in which social media and smart devices spread misinformation, shorten our attention spans, and promote addictive behavior; but what does philosophy have to say about our contemporary technological condition? This talk will focus on the philosophy of technology. Smart phones and social media are actually the logical development of a certain “technological mindset” that began hundreds of years ago, but which can be countered by returning to the traditions and practices that focus us and give our lives meaning. Led by Bernardsville resident Philip Walsh, PhD, a faculty member of the philosophy department at Fordham University. Free. Advance sign-up is requested. Click here to sign up.
